Museum of Peoples and Cultures

Research

The Museum of Peoples and Cultures cares for the anthropological,
archaeological, and ethnographic collections in the custody of Brigham Young University.
The collections strengths are in five main areas:
the Great Basin, the American Southwest, Mesoamerica, South America, and Polynesia.

Great Basin

These holdings include Fremont material, such as prehistoric basketry and footwear, and ethnographic Ute material, such as beadwork and clothing.

American Southwest

These collections include materials from the prehistoric Pueblos such as Ancestraol Puebloan (Anasazi) and Basketmaker footwear and basketry; Mogollon pottery; modern  materials such as musical instruments, Hopi baskets, and kachina dolls; and Navajo materials, including rugs.

Mesoamerica

These collections include Mayan pottery, Casas Grandes pottery, Mexican masks, and Guatamalan textiles.

South America

The Museum's strength in this area centers in ancient Peruvian textiles and pottery.

Polynesia

These collections include tapa cloths and a wide collection of basketry.

The Museum also houses a substantial collection of black-and-white and color photographs, slides, and negatives that document BYU archaeological research and artifact materials.
