Learn and Play with Clay!

On Friday March 6, 2009 the Museum of Peoples and Cultures (MPC), in conjunction with students in Recreation Management and Youth Leadership (RMYL 320), will host a special event for preschool children.

The MPC’s exhibition “Touching the Past: Traditions of Casas Grandes,” which contains pottery recovered from northern Mexico, will be featured as an introduction to the event.  RMYL students will read stories about pottery from around the world made by different cultures, and then children will have the opportunity to get creative as they make their own pottery or sculptures to take home. Families are invited to attend one of the story sessions which begin at 10:30, 11:00, and 11:30 a.m. The event is free of charge; however, space is limited and reservations are encouraged. To schedule a reservation call 801-422-0022.

“This special Story time is a great opportunity for young children to learn about different cultures and have fun with it,” said Jessica Niven, an RMYL major planning the event.

The event is an extension of the MPC’s weekly preschooler program: Stories from Around the World which focuses on discovering the wonders that the cultures of our world hold. Folk tales are used to explore common elements like music, prayer, and art and other traditions from Mesoamerica, Africa, and South America. For more information on the program visit mpc.byu.edu.
