From All "Pots" of the World
MPC will host a special Date Night in honor of International Education Week
In recognition of International Education Week, the MPC will host a special Date Night on Friday, 20 November at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Participants will not only learn about the beautiful pottery from Fourmile Ruin in the MPC’s “New Lives” exhibition, but will see examples of pottery from other parts of the world and discover how much it can teach us about the people who made and used it. Refreshments, activities, and a chance to make your own piece of pottery will round out the evening.
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote opportunities to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. For more information, visit the link listed on the left as "International Education Week" or for a schedule of related events taking place on BYU campus, visit the link listed as "BYU Events".
So find a date and come learn about different “pots” of the world! Tickets are $10 and will be on sale at the WSC Information Desk beginning 16 November.

Recreation Collaboration
RYML groups help MPC with two projects
The MPC is excited to once again collaborate with students in Recreation Management and Youth Leadership. This semester two groups from the RMYL 320 “Project Management” course will conduct activities on behalf of the museum.
The first group will represent the museum in the 2009 BYU Homecoming Parade on Saturday, 24 October. Watch for our colorful “float”!
The second group of students will host a special FHE @ the MPC for residents of the neighboring Elms Apartment Complex. The event will have a Dia De Los Muerto or Day of the Dead theme, educating participants about this fascinating Mexican holiday.
Laura Nielsen, a therapeutic recreation major from St. Cloud, FL, is part of the group working on the Homecoming float. While the end event is all about fun, she says that participating in planning the float she has learned a lot about the MPC and representing various cultures from around the world.
“I have acquired an appreciation for the respect with which the Museum strives to represent each culture and people,” says Laura, “and hope that I can follow their example as I work with various individuals throughout my life.”

A Call for Volunteers
MPC Docent Program has new training format and is open to all
The MPC is seeking to expand our docent pool and invites you to join us! Docents lead tours, conduct programs, help with special events and generally represent the museum to the public. Training is an “independent study” format requiring four to five hours at the docent’s convenience. After that, it is expected that each docent commit to serve in the museum a few hours each month on an “on-call” basis for 12-18 months. There is no expectation that participants have previous experience in anthropology or museum work – all you need is a healthy curiosity and a willingness to learn, and then to share what you learn!
Anyone interested is encouraged to contact Kari Nelson, Curator of Education, at mpc_programs@byu.edu or (801)422-0022.
